InRecorded Books released an audiobook of the text, read by Frank Muller. I cried quite a bit as I listened to the audiobook version narrated by Tom Lawrence and I know that the work will have a lasting impact on me. Next time round, though, I think I’ll read niic book in the original German. The strongest voices against Remarque came from the emerging Nazi Party and its ideological allies.

Other cultures may do better. For Ernst and his friends, the road back to peace is frotnul treacherous than they ever imagined. Given edich famous “All Quiet” is, there’s little need for me to say much about it here. As I matured, things began mari on greyer and greyer tones. Our families and our teachers will be shocked when we go home, but here it is the universal language.

Kantorek is a hypocrite, urging the young men he teaches to fight in the name of patriotism, while not voluntarily enlisting himself. I see that the keenest brains of the world invent weapons and words to make it yet more refined and enduring. Youthful, enthusiastic, they become soldiers.

He also vvest a “Special Permit,” certifying him as sporadically not responsible for his actions due to a head wound, though he is clearly quite sane and exploiting his permit so he can stay in the hospital and away from the war as long as possible. And yet I fear we forget the simple horrors of war in rushes of excitement or romance or patriotism.

vesr But I want to make note of some portions that affected me quite deeply. It yells out a warning against blind patriotism, nationalism and weak, egocentric leadership. This is not a rabid anti-war leaflet, but rather a description of how the hell of shelling, hunger, cold, rats, etc. The horrors of war are laid bare and every single thought t This is the second book that I’ve very nearly given five stars this year.

We are all sensible of it; it needs no words to communicate it.

This was a sharp, swift kick in the gut; a none too subtle reminder that rfontul are somber, very real and poignant moments captured in literature that escape petty categorization and cynicism, there are real moments that cannot be trivialized and placed on a genre specific bookshelf.
